George II silver "Battle of Culloden" Medal 1746 MS62 NGC, MI-615-282, Woolf-55:6a. 41.4mm, 28.7gm. By M. Holtzhey. Obv. Bust of Cumberland right. Rev. The Duke as Roman soldier with Victory holding a crown above his head, two suppliant Scots at his feet, the town of Inverness in the distance. Commemorating the final battle of the Jacobite rising of 1745, which ended in the British defeat of the rebellion. Abundant bursts of gold, amber, and russet fill the fields and devices while the exquisite motif captivates in design and strike. The duke's armor is so skillfully rendered that one could presume to hear the metal clink and clank. Contact marks limit the assigned grade but cannot limit the gorgeousness of this piece.
