Saudi Arabia ND (1950s) P-1p PCGS Choice UNC 64 10 Riyals (Back Progress Proof)

Possible Unique Back Progress Proof from Saudi Arabia

The first paper money printed for the country of Saudi Arabia were so-called Haj Pilgrim receipts, used by foreign visitors during the annual Haj to Mecca and first introduced in 1953. That note, Pick-1, was printed by Thomas de La Rue in England and is one of the classic key notes for the country, particularly in higher grade. This lot offers a seldom-seen inside look in the design process, as it is an alternative design of the back note used during production of the actual notes for circulation.

While we can not confirm that this was produced by Thomas de la Rue (it is possible this was produced in Saudi Arabia prior to Thomas de la Rue receiving the contract) it is certainly from the time period and printed by a high quality printer. Printed in purple instead of green, the text is printed in five different languages (as on the issued notes) but is laid out differently. The Saudi coat of arms is seen near the top. Possibly unique, not previously offered at public auction, and an important opportunity for the Middle Eastern specialist.
