Last reigning Empress Regnant of Russia; a great patron of the arts, revitalized Russia's culture, continued its modernization; enlarged Russia's frontiers and established it as one of the great powers of Europe; an enthusiastic supporter of the ideals on Enlightenment - within the confines of an authoritarian regime. One-page, handwritten financial document, 6 ¾ x 6 ½", in Russian, from the Office of Housing and Parks, March 20, 1769. Signed boldly below "Catherine" as empress; and her son Paul, Emperor of Russia, 1796-1801. One-page handwritten document in Russian, 7 ½ x 4 ¾", Pavlovsk, June 14, 1798. "We most mercifully order our operator to produce expense money of four Rubles a day. From the amount for the maintenance of our yard; we remain supportive. Signed "Paul I" as emperor below. Pavlovsk, named after Paul (Pavel), was the emperor's summer residence just outside of St. Petersburg. Fine. Attractively matted in an ornate 12 ¾ x 18 gold frame..
