United States Secretary of State (1861-1869), earlier Governor of New York and New York Senator; determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War; staunch defender of the Union, his firm stance against foreign intervention in the Civil War helped deter Great Britain and France from recognizing independence of the CSA; seriously wounded by conspirator Lewis Powell as one of the targets in the assassination plot that killed Lincoln; negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
