Seward, William H. (1801-1872). United States Secretary of State (1861-1869), earlier Governor of New York and New York Senator; determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War; staunch defender of the Union, his firm stance against foreign intervention in the Civil War helped deter Great Britain and France from recognizing independence of the CSA; seriously wounded by conspirator Lewis Powell as one of the targets in the assassination plot that killed Lincoln; negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. Document Signed "William H. Seward" as Secretary of State. Official certification of former CSA soldier Charles Moore Swagar's Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America.
