[Civil War: CSA: Prisoner of War Camps]. Excessively Rare Confederate P.O.W. Cover. Cover for a letter sent to Union prisoner Lt. George Kies of Company K of the 18th Connecticut Infantry while he was held in Charleston at either Roper Hospital or "The Workhouse". Postmarked "Worcester Mass Oct. 12 (1864") and bearing the mark of examiner Lt. Hugh Hamilton Rogers, Provost Marshal in Charleston. Roper Hospital was not used to attend to wounded or ill prisoners, but rather Union officers who had signed their paroles. Prisoners were held briefly at Roper while awaiting transfer to the Columbia parole camp. Located near the city jail, "The Workhouse", meanwhile, held officers who largely had as yet to submit their paroles. This is believed to be the only known cover extant ever sent to Roper Hospital of The Workhouse and thus is excessively rare. Comes with copies of Kies war record and related information. Clean, easily-repaired tear from left margin to end of the word "Care" and small tear from top into recipient's first name. Very Good. Ex Alexander Auctions Sale 38, lot 355..
