(g) Victoria (1837-1901), 'Shieldback' Sovereign, 1864 'Stub-top 4' [Die 83], second larger young head, W.W. incuse on truncation, rev. B of BRITANNIARVM with no top serif, crowned normal shield in wreath, edge milled, 8.00g, 6h (Marsh 49; Bentley 1049 same dies; MCE 525; Spink 3853), slight cabinet friction, otherwise pleasingly lustrous, almost extremely fine, the reverse much as issued, an interesting variety.
Cursory study of the reverse dies of the 1864 issue of Sovereigns, identifies a small spread of dies within this extensive series where an abnormal or faulty 'B' punch was employed. Curiously they are not sequential but across the series. The cataloguer has noted the following cases across dies 31; 32; 37; 40; 53; 60; 61; 62; 64; 65; 71; 83; 85; 90; 91; 92 or under a fifth of the 100+ die numbers recorded by Marsh.
Estimate: £400 - £450
