MAHARANI BAIZA BAI | India, Princely States, Gwalior, temp. Maharani Baiza Bai, regent (AH 1243-1249 / 1827-1833), gold Mohur in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah, Lashkar, frozen date, AH 113[0], year 2, [... sihab qiran...], rev. jalus maimanat manus with the addition of "Sri" in Devanagari script, 10.85g, 5h (KM 126). Extremely fine, scarce.

Maharani (queen) Baiza Bai (1784-1863), was a Maratha noblewoman and banker who served as regent in Gwalior after the death of Daulat Rao Sindhia. She worked with the British to supress Thuggee but was nevertheless resolutely against the East India Company and, a trained soldier in her own right, actually fought against the future Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Assaye. Nevertheless, as a powerful banker, she was later pragmatic enough to act as a large-scale financier to The Company who believed their support of her regency would shield them from the onus of repayment. It did not. While still regent, Baiza Bai exacted the capital and interest on her loan, and it was repaid to her personally.
