MORBIS INSPECTIS DESCRIPTISQVE MERVIT. VNIV: COLL: HOSP: SCHOL: MED: VNIV: LONDIN: ALVMNVS., edge inscribed, W.J.M. SADLER SUMMER SESSION 1926-27, 38mm, 28.82g (BHM 1310; cf Eimer 1198). Partial faded die error in legend for OWES of FELLOWES, some light hairlines but otherwise extremely fine, and rare.

Dr. Matthew Steel MRCS LRCP MB BS MD FRCP, born in Berkshire on the 15th of March 1916, attended Reading School before excelling at University College Hospital Medical School, London. Graduating in 1940, Matthew obtained both the Butterworth essay Prize and Fellowes Gold Medal in Summer 1939. After a short stint at the Hospital itself, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) until 1947.

From his appointment in 1951, Matthew became a pioneer in the development of Grimsby's medical services and helped further postgraduate medical education in the area. A keen salmon fisherman, he was also interested in history, and president of the local Rotary Club. He died on the 5th of August 1980, having lived a long and fulfilled life, leaving behind his wife and two sons.
