Henry VIII (1509-1547), gold Sovereign, third coinage (1544-47), Southwark Mint, initial mark S both sides, facing crowned robed figure of King on ornate throne, rose below, 8 type legend with Gothic lettering and beaded border surrounding, slipped trefoil stops, S hEnRIC; 8; DI; GRA; AGL' ' 'FRAnCIE; Z; hIBERn'; REX, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, with lion and dragon supporters, HR ligatured on banner below, Latin legend with Roman lettering and beaded border surrounding, S IhS; AVTEM; TRAnSIEnS; PER MEDIVM; ILLOR; IBAT;, 12.29g (Schneider 611; N.1825; S.2291). Toned, some light wear to high points and a little uneven in shape, a little weaker more on elements of design than in the legend as usual, otherwise about very fine for issue and pleasing.

This issue with mint mark letter S produced at the Southwark Mint in the south-east of London was struck at a 20-carat gold standard from the 1st April 1546 until the end of the reign. The amount struck of this individual mint mark is not known. Only a total amount struck for the period is known which covers all the Southwark Mint, Bristol Mint and Tower Mint with pellet in annulet mark which totals £263,165 worth of gold weighing some 8,772 pounds.
