Sulayhids. 'Arwa bint Ahmad. AH 484-532 / AD 1091-1137. AV Half-Dinar (17.8mm, 1.19 g, 3h). Dhu Jibla mint. Dated AH 498 (AD 1104/5). Citing the deceased Fatimid imam al-Mustansir billah. SICA 10, 66 (same dies); Album 1078.1. Slightly ragged edge. Near EF.

This coin is struck in the name of al-Mukarram Ahmad, Arwa's husband, for whom she acted as regent until his death. Thereafter, Arwa assumed de facto rule in Yemen, maintaning an extensive correspondence with the Fatimids. Letters sent to her by the Fatimid rulers of the day refer to her by titles such as 'Deputy of the Commander of the Faithful,' while she herself became the first woman whose name was proclaimed in the khutba.
