Pre-reform issues, Arab-Sasanian. Umayya b. 'Abdallah. fl. AH 73-78 / AD 693-698. AR Drachm (27.5mm, 2.74 g, 3h). BBA (the court or camp) mint. Dated AH 77 (AD 696/7). Obverse margin: - / bismillah ∴ / YANBWT (?) / -. Malek, Arab-Sasanian 154; SICA 1, p. 33, note 184; Album 29. Fine. Rare.
While sometimes described as 'clipped' when offered in auction catalogues, it seems clear that drachms of Umayya b. 'Abdallah from the court mint were in fact struck on smaller flans and to a lighter weight standard than regular Arab-Sasanian silver. In this respect it seems that these coins anticipate the post-Reform dirham coinage, introduced in the following year and struck to a weight of approximately 2.93g.
