SICILY. Leontini. AR Tetradrachm (16.33 gms), ca. 476-466 B.C. VERY FINE.
HGC-2, 662; SNG Fitzwilliam-1030. Obverse: Charioteer driving Quadriga right, Nike flying right, crowning horses; Reverse: Head of roaring lion right, four barley grains and LEONTINON around. Well-struck on a broad round flan, this Tetradrachm displays a bold lion head on its reverse. The obverse surface suffers some roughness and porosity, but retains a fairly clear strike. With limited circulation wear and just a few light marks and scratches, the coin is well-preserved overall. The surfaces exhibit an even metallic gray tone with subtle blue highlights and traces of underlying luster. While NGC could not come to a determination regarding authenticity and declined to encapsulate, we believe t97.JPG 01
