SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (16.99 gms), struck under Gelon I, ca. 480-475 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks.
HGC-2, 1306; Boehringer-140 (V62/R97). Obverse: Charioteer driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Diademed head of Arethousa right; four dolphins around. This Tetradrachm features a strong strike with a hint of dark toning in the protected areas that give the details a bold look. While the obverse is more weakly struck and shows minor porosity, the reverse is of impressive quality. Both sides exhibit silvery brightness and minor scratches, as well as some tooling marks on the edge, noted by NGC, which are now difficult to spot due to the holder. A striking example of the iconic Tetradrachms of Syracuse.
