IONIA. Islands off Ionia. Chios. AR Tetradrachm, ca. 270-220 B.C. NGC Ch VF.
HGC-6, 1132; Pr-2355. In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left; in left field, sphinx seated left above monogram; monogram below throne. Struck on a broad round flan and displaying an impressive portrait of Herakles. Some mild surface-level corrosion is noted on the reverse fields. A lovely exemplar of a RARE type, with no other examples found on Coin Archives.
