Charles II, Coronation 1661, gilt-silver oval Royalist badge, in the style of Thomas Simon, crowned bust r., wearing ornate lace cravat and wearing Garter Collar and George, legend in incuse, CAROLVS II DG ANG SCO FR ET HI REX, rev. the King enthroned, crowned by Peace, legend in incuse, EVERSO MISSVS SVCCVRRERE SECLO XXIII APR 1661, wreath border to both sides with rose at sides and bottom, 41 x 28mm. (MI.473/77; pl. 45, 8), suspension loop (single link attached), the loop re-affixed (probably a contemporary repair), good very fine and an exceptionally rare badge
Old ticket, believed from B. A. Seaby, dated 1959 (£9.10.00)
The badge is clearly derived from Thomas Simon's official Coronation medal and, quite possibly, could be cast from a specimen. The legends are identical, though engraved and incuse. The wreath border follows the style of the badges of his father. MI lists three examples, two in the British Museum and one in the Hunterian, of which two are gilt. No examples appear in the obvious sale catalogues, Montagu, Murdoch, Farquhar, Heckett or more recently, Christopher Foley or Peter Earthy. The cataloguers have been unable to trace another example in commerce.

Estimate: 1000 - 1250 GBP
