Victoria, gold medal issued for the coronation, 1838, Benedetto Pistrucci, diad. bust l., rev. Victoria seated, receiving her crown from Britannia, Scotia and Hibernia, lion behind, wt. 30.56gms. (BHM.1801; Eimer 1315; Woll.xvii; W&E.88.3; Stef. Vol. I, pl. 32), certified and graded by PCGS as Uncirculated Details, Edge Damaged
This piece was originally certified and graded by NGC as Mint State 62, with no mention of edge damage.
Sometimes the grading companies identify this issue as edge damage or bent (as seen in our auction 69, lot 268), due to the way the pieces are made. These medals are struck in very high relief and so can appear concave or damaged to the edge.
Sold with Canada Coin News clipping (volume 56, no. 26) of the medal advertised as being for sale in auction where it realised $16,1000, more than doubling the presale estimate of $8,000.
Estimate: 6000 - 7000 GBP
