Art Medal, USA, "Hopi / Prayer for Rain", very slightly oval bronze medal [1931], by Herman Atkins MacNeil (1866-1947), for the Society of Medallists and struck by the Medallic Art Company, issue three, Five Hopi Indian dancers, two with snakes in their mouths, lightning design beyond, rev. Indian runs with snakes whilst others follow, lightning in skies above, 70 x 73.5mm. (Baxter p. 82, 354), light tan patina with hints of green, extremely fine and scarce
Hermon MacNeil is best remembered as the designer of the Standing Liberty Quarter. His 1901 award medal for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, also features Indians and he had visited reservations in the South-West prior to designing it. The Hopi are from North-East Arizona. The medal is also illustrated by James E. Haas, "American Sculptor in the Broad, Bright Daylight".
