Hadrian. Cistophoric Tetradrachm; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Cistophoric tetradrachm, Smyrna, 10.74g. Metcalf Type 33 (14 spec.), RPC-1362 (14 spec.). Obv: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P Head bare r. Rx: COS - III Cybele, towered, seated l. on throne, holding patera and resting l. elbow on drum; lion at feet. From the same obverse die as Metcalf\'s pl. 11, 174, but a new reverse die. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Augustus with the COM - ASI Temple type, RPC-2217 or 2219. The steps of the temple from the undertype are visible on Hadrian\'s forehead and in the field before his nose and mouth; two columns are visible in his hair and a third on his neck. On the reverse the beginning of Augustus\' obverse legend, IM[P], appears upside down to the right of Cybele\'s turreted crown, while the curved line in the field before Cybele\'s face is the truncation of Augustus\' portrait. .
