Gallienus. Antoninianus; Gallienus; 253-268 AD, Rome, c. 267-8 AD, Antoninianus, 3.90g. Unpublished variety of Centaur reverse, but probably not official. Obv: [GA]LLIENVS AVG Head radiate r. Rx: [AP]OLLIN[I CONS] AV[G] Centaur walking r. holding rudder and globe, officina letter in exergue is off flan. In the two standard types of officinal H=8, the centaur either walks left holding globe and rudder or walks right about to shoot an arrow from a bow. Here the first standard type is reversed: the centaur walks right holding rudder and globe. The coin may well be imitative rather than official, however: the style is slightly crude and the flan is unusually small and thick.. aVF
