Aethelred II (978?1016), Penny, Crux type (c.991?997), Winchester mint, moneyer Aethelstan, inner linear circles both sides, bare headed bust left, in front trefoil tipped sceptre, legend surrounds +Æ?ELRÆD REX ?NGLOX. Rev, short cross voided with CRVX in angles, reading + Æ?EST?N M?O PINT, 1.43g (S.1148; N.770; BMC IIIa; SCBI 7 [Copenhagen], 1342). Darkly toned, set out on an irregular flan with appears to be a groove or discrepancy in the flan at 11 o'clock, as opposed to a conventional edge chip. Portrait showing all the fundamental lines with some wear, legends generally legible. Very fine.
