William I (1066?87), Penny, PAXS (1083?86), Winchester mint, moneyer Spraeclinc, facing crowned bust with sceptre to right, legend surrounding, +PILLELM REX. Rev, cross pattee, each letter of PAXS in an annulet per angle, +SPRAECLINC ON PINC, 1.37g (S.1257; N.848; BMC VIII; SCBI 7 [Midlands], 624). Some flatness, perhaps a little weak in the obverse die (a recurring theme in many of these Winchester types issued by Spraeclinc), legends generally legible, the portrait showing the main details as is the case with the reverse PAXS motif. Near very fine, toned and on good metal.
