Charles I (1625?49), York mint, Threepence, mintmark lion (1642?44), crowned bust left, mark of value behind, legend surrounds CAROLVS DG MA BR FR ET HI REX. Rev. square?topped shield over long cross fourchée, EBOR above, outer legend reads CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, 1.30g, 9h, m.m. lion (S.2877; N.2323; Brooker 1106). Slightly off centre in the strike with pleasing variegated cabinet tone, legends intelligible, the fields clear and portrait showing good definition. About very fine with an excellent pedigree.
