›Egypt 5.1.1899 P-2b PMG Choice Fine 15 1 Pound
Iconic "Two-Camel" note from Egypt
As we mentioned in the previous lot it is not often that we have the opportunity to offer two of the greatest Egyptian rarities in one sale. As amazing as it may sound, this is the highest denomination of the series that can be acquired in issued form, as all higher denominations are only known to exist in specimen format. A classic and iconic note from Egypt that is always in great demand.
The Rowlatt signature of the 1899 series was introduced in 1906. The 1 Pound has an even smaller print total than the 50 Piastres, with 350,000 notes printed between the two signature combinations. Like the other denominations this denomination was printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. in Great Britain at a time that Egypt was a de-facto Egyptian protectorate.
While this example has spent considerable time in circulation (as all known examples have) there has been very little paper loss, and except for some wallet staining on the right side of the note, it has good eye-appeal for the technical grade. Paper quality is as could be expected for a Fine. It appears that a few minor margin splits and tears have been skillfully repaired, but the printed design of the note has been unaffected. Overall, a very respectable example of this rarity and a note that will push one lucky collection to the next level. PMG mentions "Stained; minor repairs".
