PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy II Philadelphos. 285-246 BC. AR Tetradrachm (25.5mm, 11h). Imitating Sidon mint issue. Uncertain mint 23. Dated RY 30 (256/5 BC). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, aegis around neck / Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt; to left, ΣI above monogram; Λ (date) to right. Unpublished, but for prototype: cf. CPE 520 (for prototype); cf. Svoronos 732; cf. SNG Copenhagen 511. In NGC encapsulation 6057960-015, graded Ch VF. Very rare.
Mint 32 is typically known for striking imitations of the dated issues of Ptolemaïs (Ake), but the style of this example, imitating Sidon, is a perfect match for the dies of that mint, which also probably struck imitative issues beginning with Ptolemy I (see CNG E-525, lot 561 and CNG E-524, lot 247).
