ITALY, Apulia (duchy). Roberto il Guiscardo. 1059-1085. AV Tarì (18mm, 0.95 g). Amalfi mint. Struck circa 1076-1077(?). Pseudo-Kufic legend around central R / Pseudo-Kufic legend around central pellet. Cf. MIR 5; cf. Traviani 52-3; cf. MEC 14, 40 (for related issue with cross or pellet on obverse). Broken and repaired. VF. Apparently unique.
The fabric and form of the pseudo-Kufic legends on this unpublished tarì tie it to a rare anonymous series from the Amalfi mint. Though there is some scholarly debate, Traviani proposes that some of the group was struck by Roberto il Guiscardo prior to his conquest of Salerno in 1077. The presence of the letter R on this important piece appears to confirm the attribution.
