Hawaii Republic Of Hawaii, Department of Finance 5 Dollars 1895 (ND 1899) Pick 6p1; 6p2 Front and Back Proofs PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ; Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The Republic of Hawaii existed for a brief time between the Kingdom of Hawaii and the US annexation of Hawaii in 1898. This beautiful Proof of the $5 is dated 1895, although issued notes were not released until 1899. At the time of cataloging, one "uncancelled" issued note is graded by PMG, along with one cancelled note as well, indicating how rare this design is. Additionally, this Proof is the first and only example of this format currently graded by PMG. The face side has a wide counterfoil at left, and the back side is mounted to cardstock for rigidity. Extremely rare in any format. Beautiful and historic.
