KINGS OF MACEDON. Antigonos II Gonatas, 277/6-239 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 17.09 g, 8 h), Amphipolis, circa 229-221/0. Horned head of Pan to left, wearing goat's skin tied around his neck and with lagobolon behind; all within the center of a Macedonian shield adorned with seven stars within double crescents. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOΥ Athena Alkidemos striding to left, hurling thunderbolt with her upraised right hand and holding shield with her left; in field to left, Macedonian helmet with transverse crest; in field to right, HΛ monogram. Panagopoulou Period IV, Group 14, 62 var. (O15 corr./R- obverse die misidentified & unrecorded reverse die ). Last Pan/Athena Alkidemos according to Panagopoulou. Very fine.

According to the Panagopoulou corpus, this is the last obverse die ever used for the Pan/Athena Alkidemos type. It is interesting that although the whole group 14 (numbers 60-62) was struck from the same obverse die according to the corpus, it is more than obvious from the coins depicted in the plates that #60 and 61 were struck from a different obv. die than #62, which shares the same obverse die with our coin. Only 3 coins are recorded with this obverse die, including this example.
