KINGS OF BOSPOROS. Cotys III, AD 227/8-233/4. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.56 g, 1 h), year 528 of the Bosporan era = 231-232. BACIΛEωC KOTΥOC Diademed and draped bust of Cotys III to right. Rev. ΗΚΦ Laureate and draped bust of Severus Alexander to right. MacDonald 577/1. Light roughness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Cotys III was the king of Bosporos, perhaps alongside his brothers, Sauromates III and Rhescuporis IV, with whom his coinage overlaps. Very little is known about him other than what can be gleaned from his coins. From an inscription we do known that he was the son of his predecessor, Rhescuporis III, and he was perhaps the father of his successor, Ininthimeus. He died two years after this coin was struck, in 234.
