Curacao 25.11.1954 P-42 PMG Very Fine 20 100 Gulden

An extremely rare high denomination issue from the Dutch island of Curacao, located off of the coast of Venezuela. The series of Curacao, particular those issued from 1930 to 1960, are heavily collected but all but the two lowest denominations are extremely rare in any grade. The 100 Gulden, which represented a contemporary face value of approximately 50 US Dollars, is one of the higher denominations and none of the dates issued comes up with any regularity at public auction. In fact, they are typically only sold when advanced collections are sold. The PMG population report shows that just two examples of this note have been graded as of February 2023. The other is strongly held in an advanced collection and is unlikely to come to the market in the near future.

The Van Elmpt reference on banknotes of Curacao and the Netherlands Antilles (whose issue in 1962 replaced these notes in circulation) states that just 50,000 of this denomination and issue were printed by Johan Enschede in the Netherlands, first issued into circulation in 1955. Unlike other dates, the 1954 issue was never reprinted, and subsequent issues of 1958 and 1960 replaced most of these in circulation. A view of the Fort of Saba is seen at the center, and a representation of the Dutch Maiden is seen at left. While this example obviously spent time in circulation, it is problem-free, has no writing, tears or other problems and would make for an excellent addition to an advanced Curacao collection.
