This issue was struck from silver taken from a Spanish treasure fleet at the Battle of Vigo Bay on 23 October 1702. All of the merchant galleons, plus their escort fleet of French ships-of-the-line, were either captured or destroyed in the action, a welcome morale boost for the parties of the Second Grand Alliance fighting the War of the Spanish Succession.
