Paraguay - Restrike Pattern Set 5, 10 and 20 Centavos (3) 18xx, Silver Lion with liberty cap. Rev. star within wreath.Pratt M61-63; Cf. KM. PnA37-C37.This particular pattern set was created in 1887 during the presidency of Patricio Escobar. Minted at the Paris mint, the coins were designed by Louis-Charles Bouvet (1806-1887). While Bouvet was recognized in France as a legitimately fine medalist, his professional record up to that point was somewhat shabby. Having previously worked for the U.S. mint in Philadelphia, his work was deemed slobby by his superiors as his designs often had the marks of being made at the very last moment. In contrast, the designs he prepared for the restrike pattern set were praised by his peers as attractive and very well-executed, but they were never adopted by the Paraguayan government. While the coins were meant for circulation in 1889, Paraguay's numerous internal crises prevented any serious numismatic activity for almost four decades.
Extremely rare, the coins in this charming set are in immaculate condition, being vividly toned in the center and along the peripheries, while also containing sharp details. Although some die cracks are certainly present, few are bothersome, and they generally blend with the attractive light grey patina. Seldom offered in any condition, let alone complete, this coin set is worthy of closer examination by those who specialize in collecting South American pattern issues. Last two digits of date omitted. RRR Pristine condition, all struck over Argentinian 20 or 10 Centavos. NGC MS63, MS65 & MS66
