AV stater Year 19 (315/4 BC), ALEXANDER III the Great 336–323 BC, MACEDONIAN KINGDOM Posthumous issue. Sidon (?). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. Nikè standing left holding wreath and stylis, T (date) to left, AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ right.Price 3505; Müller –.Alexander the Great came to power after his father's assassination in 336 BC. Building on the foundation his father had laid, he had conquered at only thirty-three years old most of the known world. From the deserts of Arabia to the mountains of Afghanistan, and the jungles of India. His army, however greatly outnumbered, crushed the Persian Empire in less than 4 years. He unlocked the vast treasures of the Persian Empire and started to strike coins from it to pay his Army and his followers.
This gold Stater, struck in the name of Alexander the Great, is likely struck from the spoils of the Persian empire. It is from an interesting issue of dated ancient coins. The letter in the left field of the reverse indicates the year in which it was struck. From the sequence of the letters and hoard evidence, year 1 of this series must be identified with 333 BC, the year of Alexander's arrival in Phoenicia. With this starting date our coin must be struck in 315/4 BC. Traditionally, the series as a whole has been attributed to the city of Sidon, but this is by no means certain. Alternatively, the cities of Damascus and Ake have been suggested, of which the latter is the more plausible.8.56 g. NGC Ch AU. Strike 4 out of 5; Surface 4 out of 5
