AV Aureus 250-251 AD, TRAJANUS DECIUS 249–251 AD Rome. Laureate and cuirassed bust right IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG. Rev. Abundantia standing to right emptying cornucopiae held in both hands ABVNDANTIA AVG.RIC 10a; Coh. 1.The coinage of Trajan Decius' reign is of considerable interest to historians. Much emphasis was placed by Roman engravers on the commemoration of Decius' victories against the Goths, who, by end of 248 or 249 AD had crossed the Danube and overran Moesia and Thrace.
This particular aureus featuring the goddess Abundantia can be directly tied to these important historical events. In Roman imperial cult and propaganda, Abundantia was generally represented as the goddess of abundance and money, and in particular the circular flow of trade exports and imports. By beating back the Goths, Decius had recaptured the trade routes along the Danube river that were vital for transporting goods and people between Asia Minor and the west. In many ways, the emperor with his military victories had, for now, secured Abundantia's favor, thus warranting her appearance on this coin. 4.35 g. R Exceptional quality, with needle sharp details. Virtually as struck Nearly mint
