Ecuador - 8 Escudos 1850 GJ, Gold Quito mint. Head of Bolivar right EL PODER EN LA CONSTITUTION. Rev. coat of arms.Fr. 8; KM. 34.1.Simon Bolivar was a Venezuelan soldier and statesman who led several revolutions against Spanish rule in the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, ultimately managing to unite Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador into one single entity known as the Republic of Gran Columbia. Being a man of international renown in his day, Bolivar's reputation as a conqueror and liberator almost grew to mythical proportions after his passing. This is evidenced by the fact that Bolivar's bust was featured on the coins of Ecuador, despite the fact that Ecuador already had withdrawn from Gran Colombia in 1830.
Interestingly, Bolivar's commemorative portrait would be replaced in 1884 by that of marshall Antonio José de Sucre, another key figure in Ecuadorean independence. The reason for this change is not entirely clear, although this might have to do with the fact that several Latin American mints already had appropriated Bolivar's image and the Ecuadorean engravers of the Lima mint simply wanted to stake their own claim to a different historical figure. 26.91 g. RR. Sharp details, appealing frosty color Almost UNC
