Great Britain - Pound Sovereign of 20 shillings n.d. (1598-1600), Gold, ELIZABETH I 1558–1603 Tower mint. Sixth issue, mm. anchor over key / anchor over key. Crowned bust with elaborate dress left, a profusion of hair slipping into legend ELIZABETH: D. G'. ANG. FRA. ET: HIB. REGINA·. Crowned square-topped arms dividing E – R, SCRUTUM· FIDEI: PROTEGET: EAM·.S. 2534; N. 2008; Schneider II, 803.While an overwhelming majority of the coinage issued by Elizabeth I was struck in silver rather than gold, their designs were somewhat lackluster. This was mainly because the mint masters of Elizabeth were all gold-smiths, being relatively inexperienced in processing and refining silver. They saved their best engraving and portraits for gold coinage and this pound sovereign is very reminiscent of this fact. The intricate dress and ruffs of Elizabeth I are masterfully crafted and the overall quality of this majestic piece is excellent with little to no notable marks. It is a very well-struck example, except for an area of weakness at Elizabeth's crown. The face of Elizabeth is somewhat shallow and vague, but its features are impeccably detailed. Altogether an intriguing piece which could only be afforded by the richest and most prominent English nobles of Elizabeth's court.11.15 g. RRR. Extremely rare piece in this quality with a seldom-seen mint mark. NGC MS62
