This medal was awarded for one of a series of small-ship actions during the Russo-Turkish War culminating in the action on 17-18 June 1788, when 58 Russian ships armed with 400 guns and 5,500 men attacked a much larger Turkish force. One Russian squadron was commanded by John Paul Jones.
