This VICTORIA CARPICA issue was struck to celebrate the victory over the Carpi, a Dacian tribe after whom the Carpathian Mountains were named, in AD 247. The tribe, who had formed an alliance with the Goths and repeatedly attacked Roman territories from the north throughout the 240s, were so heavily beaten by Philip and his armies in 247 that there is no longer any historical mention of the former by the 5th century.
