Edward VII gold Sovereign 1908-C UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM14, S-3970. A fabled Canadian rarity that requires little introduction. A minuscule reported mintage of only 633 pieces according to Marsh, and therefore considered rare in any condition. The present example admits signs of cleaning on the obverse, all the while areas of the original satin finish are apparent on the reverse. Quite an attainable offering, and one for those opportunities that warrant grabbing with both hands.

An excerpt discovered by Mr. Woodside from the Montreal Gazette, December 4, 1908, reveals that half a dozen gold bricks from the Dr. Reddick Larder Lake Gold Mines, aggregating between 60 and 70 ounces, were brought to the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint by Dr. Reddick and Lt.-Col. S. M.. Rogers to be minted into Sovereigns. The coins were to become the first gold ones made In Canada, and the gold the first Canadian metal of that kind to be minted. According to the article, Dr. Reddick is quoted stating that the value of the six bricks was about $1,600.
