Van Diemen's Land, Conditional Pardon on vellum to James Brown previously transported for life in 1832, provided he never returns to the United Kingdom, signed by Sir Henry Edward Fox Young, Captain General and Governor on 17 September 1857, with a large impressed seal. With folds and foxing, otherwise fine.

James Brown from the town of Kingston upon Thames was sentenced to transportation for life at Salop Assizes. He was transported from England on the convict ship 'England', departing 31 March 1832 and arriving at Van Diemen's Land on 18 July 1832.

Sir Henry Edward Fox Young was a colonial administrator. He had a varied career finally being appointed Governor of Van Diemen's Land in 1855. This proved to be a difficult task with allegations of corruption within the Convict Department. He finally resigned in 1861 and returned to England where he had many interests. He died on 18 September 1870.
