British counterstamped coinage, French interest, Antoine Claude Nicolas Valdec de Lessart (1741-1792), a George III, worn and pierced halfcrown, 1817, stamped across King's neck in thin line, DELESSART, an unusual though posthumous association item, stamp fine
de Lessart, the illegitimate son of the Baron de Gasq, was President of the Parlement de Guyenne, a director of the Compagnie de Indes, Maître des requêtes and [1788] one of three financial commissaries to the King. He worked closely with Jacques Necker. Arrested in early 1792 he was part of a group of 52 prisoners summoned to trial in Paris. However, he and 43 others were massacred at Versailles by Claude Fournier L'Héritier "the American".
