Charles II, Naval Victories [1667], a later uniface striking by Matthew Young, c. 1812, of the reverse of a proposed medal, by John Roettier, Britannia seated on the shore, holding shield and spear and crowned by two cherubs, ships at sea beyond and sun-in-majesty above, 69mm. (MI.537/188, illustrated; pl. LIV, 6), very fine and an extreme rarity
The face of Britannia is that of Frances Stuart, "La Belle Stuart", Duchess of Richmond (1647-1702). In the early years of the 19th century the eminent numismatist, collector and dealer, Matthew Young (1770-1838) purchased a number of dies and other material from the Roettier family. He struck a very small number of pieces (Medallic Illustrations lists only the example in the national collection), before the die was presented to the British Museum in 1829.

Estimate: 150 - 250 GBP
