E. E. M. Lawford served in the 1st Madras Cavalry in the Afghan War 1879-80 and was present at the engagements Girishk, Khushk-i-Xakhud and Maiwand, at the Defence of Candahar and at the Battle of Candahar (medal with clasp); served with the Burmese Expedition 1886-87 (medal with clasp); and in the operations of the Chin Field Force, 1889 (clasp). In 1902 he was appointed a full Colonel on the staff, Rangoon; he later served in the Great War and retired to Yateley Court, Yateley, Hants. In 1899 He edited "My Jubilee Visit to London", an account by a Native Officer of the Madras Lancers of his part in the Diamond Jubilee Procession where he met Queen Victoria and his feelings about the colonial country "The only thing both countries have in common is that they are peopled by human beings".
