France, Louise Paras, uniface cast lead portrait medal, c. 1650's, by Nicolas Bidau (1622-1692), bust l, her hair in ringlets, her dress low over her breasts, fastened with a jewel with pearl drop, LOVISE. PARAS., signed below, BIDAV. F, beaded border, 109mm. (BDM I. 186; BMC [Jones -]), tiny piercing in the border, a handsome portrait medal, very fine and extremely rare
Forrer (BDM) states that some twenty medals by Bidau are known. As a medallist he had trained under Claude Warin and his style is very much in that of his teacher. Bidau is better remembered as a sculptor who executed numerous works in the city of Lyon. He was appointed sculptor to King Louis XIV in 1680.
