France, Louis XIV (1638-1643-1715), bronze medals (3), by Jean Mauger, third older head r., Discovery of the five moons of Saturn, 1686; the King's illness, 1686, rev. by Jérôme Roussel; the creation of 74 Knights of the Order of the Saint-Espirit, 1689, rev. by Jérôme Roussel, each 41mm. (Divo 214, 217, 226), nearly extremely fine (3)
The first with a fine astronomical reverse. Saturn is now thought to have some 60 moons. The King's well-documented illness in 1686 was an extremely painful anal fistula which, after a number of failed attempts to remove it (one included the use of a red-hot iron), was successfully operated on by Charles-Francois Felix. The new Knights of the Saint-Espirit were created between January 1 and February 2, 1689.

Estimate: 100 - 150 GBP
