Jan van Leiden, Dutch-born Anabaptist leader who moved to Münster in 1533 declaring himself the King of a New Jerusalem. The insurrection was suppressed after Münster was besieged in June 1535 by Franz von Waldeck and Jan van Leiden was captured and, with two others, executed in the town square.
