Korvettenkapitän Ehrhardt had fought an eventful war before forming the Freikorps that carried his name and shortly afterwards participating in the Kapp Putsch. He was later to be an outspoken critic of Hitler and although one of those listed to be killed during the Night of the Long Knives, he made his escape to Austria. The Viking longboat was the badge of the Marinebrigade Ehrhardt.
