The Plantation Nismes was a sugar producing plantation on the West Bank of the Demerara River in British Guiana, that had its origins in the days of the slave trade. Shortly after this award, in December 1905, the Estate was one of many seriously affected by strikes. After the Governor, Sir Frederick Hodgson, had refused to meet with the strikers, the plantation owners systematically broke the strikes by identifying the ringleaders and expelling them from the estates, forcing the workers to continue to work for low wages.
