Sir John Cass (1661-1718) had been elected as one of the Tory MP's for the City of London in 1710 and he served as Alderman for the ward of Portsoken from January 1711 (OS). In 1710 he established a school for 50 boys and 40 girls in rented buildings in the churchyard of St Botolph-without-Aldgate. He knighted in 1712. The Foundation was founded in 1748, but Cass's philanthropy was extensive and is well documented, though in recent times it has been seen to be tainted by his having derived much wealth from his position as a member of the court of of the Royal African Company.
Weirfield School for Girls merged with Taunton School in 1971.

Estimate: 100 - 140 GBP
