John Chiene was a Scottish surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh during some of its most influential years and President of the Royal College of Surgeons from 1897-99. The Chiene Medal, which continues to be presented as an annual prize in surgery at the University, is a reduction of this much larger medal. The medallist "W. G. S." has not been identified.
