The Primrose League was formed in 1883, to spread Conservative principles and taking its name from the favourite flower of Benjamin Disraeli. A hand-written note with the cased Knight's badge states, "The badge of a Primrose League Fame, This is the one of the Margaret Amherst ...not to be parted with or sold...". Margaret Tyssen-Amherst (1835-1919) was a member of the Ladies' Grand Council of the Primrose League. Her papers relating to the League are held by London University: London School of Economics Library, Archives and Special Collections.
